At the present time, the Instructional Support Services Department at
Thomas Edison High School offers students with Individualized Education
Plans the following programs- Self Contained Classes, Special Education
Teacher Support Services and Related Services.
Beginning in September 2007, we will be offering a Life Skills/ Basic Skills
class. This class is a 12:1:1 which will be offered to students who meet a
specific criteria. Those qualifying students will receive their academic classes
in a small structured setting. In addition, these students will spend 2 periods
a day in our model apartment where they will develop independent living
skills.
Our Self-Contained special education classes have a student/staff
ratio of 15:1 and are available in all of the major academic subject
areas, music and two shop sequences.
Self-contained classes follow the same curriculum as the general
education classes and are geared to address the individual needs of the
student as well as target each student's learning style ensuring academic
success.
The two self-contained shop classes that we offer are Automotive
Technology and Home Renovation/Woodworking. It is in these shop
classes that students have the opportunity to apply their skills in a hands-on
setting.
